“Make the City Better” Awards Ceremony was founded by China Institute of City Competitiveness in Hong Kong in 2011. It is a high-end city awards ceremony with international influence. It aims at reviewing and summarizing achievements of China's urban construction and development, praising city governments and leaders that have made outstanding contribution to promoting city comprehensive competitiveness, city growth competitiveness, reform and innovation, credit construction, happiness construction, security construction, ecological construction, investment promotion, appropriate business livable city, appropriate tourism working city and quality life in the last year, making Chinese cities develop in the direction of internationalization, modernization and branding and highlighting the important role on the world economic stage of Chinese cities.

With the tenet and concept of “Serving the City, Promoting the City, Improving the City” and with the purpose of being “The First Awards Ceremony of China City”, city awards ceremony is held once a year.

The first “Make the City Better” Awards Ceremony was held in World Trade Center, Causeway Bay, Hong Kong on December 15, 2011. Gao Yuchen deputy commissioner of Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic Of China in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Liu Hanqi, deputy director of culture and sports propaganda department of Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Ling Jiaqin, director of Planning Department, Hong Kong, Gui Qiangfang, president of CICC, and Xue Fengxuan, vice president of CICC, awarded for winning cities.
